Vocab Def.s and Sentences

accolade: sign of praise
The play received accolades from the press.
acerbity: bitterness
I show acerbity to my mom when she gets on my nerves.
attrition: a reduction or decrease in numbers, size, or strength
The stocks have showed attrition over the past couple of weeks.
bromide: a binary compound of bromine with another element, such as silver
Bromide ions reduce the sulphuric acid to sulfur dioxide gas.
chauvinist: somebody with a sense of superiority
Chauvinists are all over high school, even some of the teachers are chauvinists.
chronic: constant; habitual
Chronic pain may ensue if one doesn't keeping taking their pills.
expound: describe and explain something
I tried to expound the situation to him, but he would have none of it.
factionalism: self-interested; partisan
I've never seen such a huge factionalist. He's really into his cause.
immaculate: clean
Her room is never immaculate. Always messy...
imprecation: curse: an oath or curse
The witch made an imprecation to the king, it soon came to pass and brought woe to his kingdom
ineluctable: not to be avoided
 Some candidates are ineluctable and we shouldn't vote for them.
mercurial: lively and unpredictable
Beatrice was considered mercurial by her friends. Therefore, everyone wanted to hang out with her.
palliate: to reduce the intensity or severity of something
Donna always managed to palliate the Doctor's troubles and worries with a good joke.
protocol: the customs and regulations dealing with diplomatic formality
The captain was just following protocol when he ordered his men to fire.
resplendent: dazzling
That chandelier is simply resplendent!
stigmatize: label as socially undesirable
2 cubes of sugar was fine, but to place 3 sugar cubes in one's tea is simply stigmatized in our society
sub rosa: secretly or privately
The sub rosa was planned to tkaae the enemy by surprise.
vainglory: excessive pride
McFlair's vainglory was what caused his warriors to abandon him later on in the story.
vestige: a trace or sign of something that is no longer present
the vulture left a vestige of the antelope.
volition: The act or an instance of making a conscious choice or decision
His volition to go see the football game ended up working to his benefit in the end.
